Republic Day in Kazakhstan is a holiday with a complicated history. It has gone from an institution to oblivion and rebirth at the current stage. Let's trace this path through legislative acts, recall the history of the development of republican government in the country.
In September 2022, amendments were made to the Law "On Holidays in the Republic of Kazakhstan" concerning the main holidays in the state.
What is the Republic Day holiday in Kazakhstan? The Law (Article 2) states that Republic Day is the main and only national holiday. It was established in honor of the first step on the path to independence — the adoption of the "Declaration of State Sovereignty of the Kazakh SSR". Independence Day, December 16, remains a significant holiday, but its status has been changed to a state one.
The period of the collapse of the USSR intensified in 1990, when the "parade of sovereignty" of the Soviet republics swept. Kazakhstan adopted the "Declaration on State Sovereignty of the Kazakh SSR" on October 25, 1990. In honor of this event, in 1995, October 25 was declared a national holiday, Republic Day.
In December 2001, the Republic Day was given the status of a state holiday. In 2009, the attitude towards it changed: the proclamation of state sovereignty was considered an intermediate stage, after which a more important event came — the declaration of independence of Kazakhstan. Therefore, in April 2009, the celebration of the Republic Day was canceled.
In June 2022, at a meeting of the National Kurultai, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev proposed to restore the celebration of the Republic Day and return it to the status of a national holiday. This fact underlines the importance of the declaration on the sovereignty of the country, it is considered as the first significant step towards independence, the starting point of the modern history of Kazakhstan, the significance of which has been unfairly forgotten.
On this solemn day, we wish everyone good health, success in good endeavors, happiness, peace, prosperity and goodness!
